Green Election

The Future of Elections: Embracing Green Initiatives

The Green Election initiative, led by Dr. Heera Lal, IAS, represents a groundbreaking approach to integrating environmental sustainability with electoral processes in India. First conceptualised during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Banda, Uttar Pradesh, and later implemented under the supervision of the Election Commission of India across Punjab (06–Anandpur Sahib Parliamentary Constituency), urban constituencies in Maharashtra, the Visavadar Assembly by-election in Gujarat, and most recently during the Bihar State Assembly Elections, the initiative has consistently demonstrated how elections can be conducted in an environmentally responsible manner. The model stands out for its focus on reducing plastic usage, promoting biodegradable materials, encouraging plantation activities, and mobilising election officials, administrators, and citizens through a collaborative, grassroots-driven approach fully aligned with ECI guidelines. Beyond enhancing the sustainability and integrity of electoral processes, the initiative contributes to broader climate action goals and aligns with multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Its successful implementation across diverse geographies highlights its potential as a replicable and scalable model, reinforcing the idea that elections can serve as a powerful platform for promoting environmental consciousness.
